Recognizing the frequent Google searches on how to hide read receipts in Instagram, the platform has taken a significant step forward by initiating tests on a new update designed to address this user concern. Instagram, the prominent social media platform, is currently in the process of piloting a highly anticipated functionality that will allow its users to disable read receipts in direct messages (DMs). This innovative feature will enable users to read messages without alerting the sender with the customary “seen” notification that typically appears beneath a message once it’s been viewed.

The introduction of this feature was jointly announced by influential figures in the technology sector, Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosseri. Mosseri, in his broadcast, emphasized the importance of user feedback in the development of this feature. He stated, “In response to the valuable input we’ve received, we have initiated trials for a new option within our DMs. This will soon empower users with the discretion to conceal the visibility of their message-read status.”

In a demonstration of this upcoming feature, Instagram’s head shared a screenshot showcasing the “Privacy & Safety” settings within the direct messaging interface. Users can navigate to this menu by selecting the profile name within a chat. For those who are included in the test phase, an option to deactivate read receipts is available under the “Who can see your activity” section.

However, Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has not provided detailed information regarding the extent of the testing phase or a specific timeline for its availability to all Instagram users.

Notably, Instagram’s move to implement this feature appears somewhat delayed, especially given its affiliation with Meta. The company is also focusing on enhancing privacy across its platforms. A significant step in this direction is the planned introduction of default end-to-end encryption for Instagram DMs. This follows Meta’s announcement in August, stating its goal to complete the integration of end-to-end encryption by default on Messenger by the end of the year, thereby bolstering the security and privacy of its users’ communications.
